I’ve discovered (or rather, been shown through The Old Schoolhouse Crew) a fabulous web site for buying books called Homeschool Library Builder. Like most homeschooling families, my family loves books! My husband’s favorites are modern-day mysteries and crime dramas. Our oldest son also loves mysteries but will read basically anything he can get his hands on. My favorite reading material is historical fiction and non-fiction.
We especially enjoy reading books together as a family. Usually I read while the others listen, and sometimes my husband will spell me if our interest lasts longer than my voice. The only problem with books is that we don’t have enough shelf space! Oh, and some books cost more than I like to spend.
Here comes Homeschool Library Builder to the rescue! When I first went to this site, I immediately saw in the left sidebar, “$1 bin, $2 bin, $3 bin.” Oh, those are the kind of choices I like!
Homeschool Library Builder currently has eight pages of books that cost only $1! These are not trash books, torn up books, lousy books, or books that everyone else in the country doesn’t want and has discarded. These are good, high quality, like new condition books that your family will actually want to read. I found a biography on Jackie Robinson, picture books by Richard Scarry, a novel about a dam that broke and flooded out an entire valley and those that lived in it, and a book of memoirs written by former slaves….just to name a few! Did I mention that each one only cost $1?
Even the regularly-priced books on Homeschool Library Builder are available at a discount. You’ll not pay Barnes & Noble price at HLB.
Homeschool Library Builder is not only for homeschooling, though! They sell books for all age ranges and from nearly every genre. I found board books for my up-and-coming-toddler, picture books for my preschooler, chapter books for my third grader, and full-length novels for myself and my husband. They even had several copies of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. HLB is a Christian company, so you can feel safe browsing their stock. No need to worry about stumbling across an inappropriate title.
In addition to their fabulous prices, Homeschool Library Builder offers a membership program that rewards purchases with free books over time. (Joining the membership program is free, by the way.) For each dollar you spend at HLB, you earn one Book Point. Fifteen book points are worth $1 toward future purchases. So, for example, today I ordered 17 books from the $1 bin. I earned 17 book points, which means I can go back to the $1 bin and get a book for free! Of course, shipping charges still apply, but with media mail the shipping is quite reasonable.
I am excited to have found Homeschool Library Builder and will be using it for years to come to supply books for our homeschool and for our personal reading enjoyment.
